H&M Garden Collection dress. Urban Outfitters chambray shirt & hat. Jeffrey Campbell Alexa wedge booties via LF Stores

Sadly, I have a stash of party & cocktail dresses that have only seen the day of light, or moonlight, a handful of times.  Fortunately, this H&M Garden Collection dress is uber versatile, allowing me to get more mileage out of it than standard party wear.  I went the chambray layering route this time, but for my next casual outing, I’ll be covering up the top portion with an oversized sweater to make the dress appear as a skirt.

Do you ever dress down your cocktail dresses for daytime wear?

If so, share your styling tips in the comments section!

UPDATE: These beauties just arrived at Oak NYC.

Meet the Jeffrey Campbell Xanadu Fur Bootie. I’m in lust.

I want that dress so bad! I don’t have lots of coctail dresses, so it’s the other way a round for me.

  4. ahhhhh. i LOVE that dress and i am sooo envious of those JC shoes. i seriously am in love with the original grey acne ones and i would definitely be willing to settle for the JC version if only they weren’t sold out everywhere! love how you’ve paired it with the quirky red socks. looks lovely! xx

  5. oh p.s. just saw your question – i’ve got lots of little dresses that i tend to put a long sleeve black t-shirt underneath and wear during the day. especially with winter-y cocktail dresses… short ones with velvet and brocade etc. long sleeved t-shirt underneath, tights, and biker boots…. and your ready for the daytime. xx

Alexxxxxxxaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Wedgesssssss! Haha, sorry. I seriously LOVE those shoes.

This outfit is so perfect with those wedges. The shape of the dress is a gorgeous silhouette, and I totally pair cocktail dresses with more causal pieces too.

I sometimes wear a rock tee under the dresses to give it that playful vibe.

Those fur JC’s are insane. I thought Xanadu’s were crazy, and now the fur Xanadu’s? They would look so amazing with an all black outfit. Ugh, if only I had the funds!

Thank you for sharing your story about meeting Chanel!

I’m a big fan of dressing down cocktail dresses, it adds so much more depth to your wardrobe. I find that flats or sandals help, and a jean jacket or white/light cardigan can do a lot.

I love how you styled this dress!

Hi Eileen! Thanks so much! The lipstick I’m wearing is NARS Heat Wave (red-orange color). I haven’t worn red lipstick since I was young but I absolutely love this color. NARS lipstick is also pretty long-lasting!
